Chinese Cultural Figures(Journaliste en chef  Wang Baosheng)Mr. Cai Ju is a profound and versatile artist. He is good at imagist and abstract paintings, as well as realistic painting techniques. Meanwhile, he has also made great achievement in sculpture. Some of his paintings are imagist, with some subject implications on the picture. Some of his other works are realistic and representational, expressing his feelings based on objective things. From representational to imagist and abstract expressions, how is Cai Ju able to create with such skills and ease? Is there a common pursue in different paintings of Cai Ju with different artistic expression? This is a question we always think about when appreciating his work.
Representational, imagist, and abstract expressing techniques all have different judging criteria. However, there’s one thing in common, that’s the artistic conception and cultural meaning the picture, the uniform style and the expressive artistic techniques. Furthermore, artists need to acquire the imagist and abstract expressing techniques gradually through starting from realistic and representational techniques. It is because the problems such as lines, colors, structure and space that need to be handled in imagist or abstract paintings are the same as those in realistic and representational paintings. A painter is able to make good abstract painters such Kandinsky and Mondrian, and the later Pollock, as well as the worldly influential Chinese born painter Zhao Wuji, etc., are all great artists with good ground-work on realistic paintings, which can illustrate it well.
Cai Ju was born in an art family. He learnt painting from his father Cai Shangguo, a famous scholar and painter when he was young. Later, he learnt Chinese painting from Ying Yeping, Zhu Qizhan, and Lin Fengmian, and Western painting from Liu Haisu, Yan Wenliang and Zhou Bichu. In mid 1960s, he worked as a teacher in Shanghai Art Technical School as his father’s assistant. In 1980s, he studied in Zhejiang Art College (now China Academy of Arts), learning from his elderly brother, the famous oil painter, Professor Cai Liang. In 1992, Cai Ju went abroad and became a professional painter. From his experience, we can clearly see that he has got good education on Chinese and Western painting, as well as comprehensive training on both imagist Chinese painting and realistic oil painting. In learning and painting, he has been either consciously or unconsciously looking for the differences and similarities between Chinese and Western painting expressions, as well as understanding the similarities and differences between the Chinese traditional paintings and Western modern abstract paintings. Another fact is, Cai Ju’s living environment changed a lot after he moved to Indonesia and Malaysia in Southeast Asia. The new feelings acquired from the nature have huge impact on his painting techniques.
His abstract paintings come from life- the thriving virgin forest on the island and diffusing vapor are displaying gorgeous colors to him. These scenes are inspiring him and driving him to explore the mystery of the nature and the infinite possibility of painting language itself. This might be the reason why he loves abstract painting!
A lot of realistic oil painting who have learnt traditional Chinese cultural will naturally display an imagist style. Cai Ju is the same. When he chooses abstract arts and referring to the modern western paintings, he also naturally turns to the theory and practice of Chinese imagist painting. This might be the reason why he is fascinated and excited about the natural scenes. What he pursues in his works is to express a poetic atmosphere with abstract oil painting techniques. At this time, he is not only using his knowledge about traditional Chinese painting, but also learning the theory and innovation about Chinese painting and combine it in his abstract oil painting.
