The “Jinghang Xingzhi — Academic Invitational Exhibition of Famous Traditional Chinese Painting Artists”, supported by the Traditional Chinese Painting Academy of the China National Academy of Arts, organized by Beijing Municipal Administration Center of Parks and the Chinese Cultural Figures (magazine), and hosted by Beijing Jingshan Park Management Office, will be exhibited at the Guande Hall (Main Hall and East/West Side Halls) of Jingshan Park from September 19 to October 22, 2025. The exhibition features over 50 masterpieces of figure, landscape, and flower-and-bird paintings by six contemporary Chinese painting masters renowned for their moral integrity and artistic excellence: Feng Yuan, Qu Jian, Liu Wanming, Jia Guangjian, Tian Liming, and Niu Kecheng. Admission to the exhibition is free of charge throughout its duration.
Situated at Jingshan: The Cultural Significance of Blending Ancient and Modern Elements
Jingshan Park is located at the center of the north-south central axis in Beijing’s inner city. Once an imperial garden of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, Jingshan Park was the highest point in Beijing and carries a profound historical and cultural heritage. The selection of Guande Hall as the exhibition venue implies a subtle cultural connection. The famous line, “To the high hills I looked; the great way I pursued” (gaoshan yangzhi, jinghang xingzhi, 高山仰止,景行行止), from the chapter “Minor Odes of the Kingdom” in the Book of Poetry·not only embodies the Chinese nation’s admiration for noble virtues and pursuit of the right path, but also echoes the “Jing” (meaning “scenery” or “great”) in “Jingshan” (Jingshan Mountain). The beautiful, ever-changing scenery of Jingshan, and the masterpieces by renowned painters complement each other, creating a unique exhibition atmosphere that combines “ancient charm with modern style”. The title of the exhibition, “Jinghang Xingzhi”, was inscribed by Feng Yuan, further strengthening this cultural link.
Six Renowned Artists: Showcasing Their Strengths in Interpreting the Spiritual Essence of Brushes and Ink in Chinese Paintings
The six participating artists interpret the diverse charm of Chinese painting in their own unique styles, demonstrating the artistic ideal of “conveying virtues through art”:
Feng Yuan excels at creating ink-wash figure paintings based on historical events and real life. This exhibition presents his historical works from a decade ago, which cover themes such as Sun Wu drilling troops, Bole appraising horses, Laozi seeking the Dao, Confucius teaching disciples, and Mencius explaining benevolence. These works vividly capture the essence of sages and the values of benevolence and righteousness in traditional Chinese culture. They strike a balance between brushwork and form, appearance and artistic conception.
Qu Jian specializes in freehand flower-and-bird paintings and color-ink landscape paintings. Emphasizing the artistic conception of freehand brushwork and the changes in ink colors, he deeply explores the symbolic significance of traditional themes such as plum blossoms, orchids, bamboos, and chrysanthemums. Integrating the literary taste of scholars with the artistic conception of ink wash, his works have formed a unique style in the modern development of freehand art.
Liu Wanming focuses on the exquisite depiction of flying and singing birds and beasts. His works not only possess the meticulousness of the Song dynasty paintings, but also embody the Confucian philosophy of “simplicity as splendor”. His simple, unsophisticated brushwork is elegant and vivid, and his finger-ink paintings are even more innovative and unique.
Jia Guangjian has in-depth research on the traditions of freehand flower-and-bird and mogu paintings of the Ming and Qing dynasties. He has especially absorbed the essence of two schools of painting: the Qingteng Baiyang (meaning “Blue Vine and White Sun”), represented by Xu Wei and Chen Chun, and the Wumen. By combining traditional composition with modern structure, the lotus joints, autumn melons, red flowers, and ink leaves in his works all exude vitality and a fresh, agile atmosphere.
Tian Liming focuses on images of people in sunlight and open spaces in his creations. He incorporates the colorful interplay of figures and nature under water vapor, natural light, and color into spatial narration. He refines a hazy, ethereal artistic realm and realizes the activation of the traditional scholar’s spirit.
Niu Kecheng deeply explores the traditional color system in color-ink freehand landscape paintings. He connects the “Five Elements” philosophy with the “Five Colors” system and masters hue and color temperature. He also inherits the Northern School painting style of the “Two Lis” (Li Sixun and Li Zhaodao) from the Tang dynasty, as well as the traditions of light crimson landscape paintings and green landscape paintings. Through these, he expands the aesthetic connotation of Oriental art.
Public Nature: Popularizing Culture for the Elegant and the Masses
The exhibition adheres to the concept of “art for the people” and highlights the nature of public cultural services. The exhibition maintains academic standards while ensuring ornamental value, achieving “appeal to both the elegant and the masses.” To do so, it chose Jingshan Park, a popular tourist destination, and specially selected simple, freehand, small-scale works by the six artists. The free admission is intended to allow more members of the public to experience the charm of Chinese painting up close in the scenery of the imperial garden, enhance their understanding and love for traditional culture, and fulfill the artistic mission of “enriching the people’s high-quality spiritual life”.
Special Design: Calligraphy and Inkstones Highlighting Traditional Aesthetics
The exhibition is organized into six special themed sections. Each artist has inscribed calligraphy works around the theme of “Jinghang Xingzhi” – including “Jinghang Xingzhi”, “Mude” (慕德), “Shendu” (慎独), “Keye” (可也), “Shangshui” (尚水), and “Guanlan” (观澜). These six calligraphy works serve as the core of each section, conveying the unique aesthetic spirit of traditional Chinese culture. The exhibition also features commemorative inkstones designed and produced by Huizhou “Longweishanfang” (龙尾山房). The six calligraphy works are engraved on a large-sized Longwei seed material She inkstone (a famous type of inkstone produced in She County, Anhui Province). This naturally formed inkstone is simple and of high antiquity, and is displayed on-site for visitors to appreciate. This not only echoes the theme of the exhibition but also expresses respect for the artistic ethics of the artists, adding scholarly elegance to the exhibition.
This exhibition is a high-level academic collection of Chinese paintings and an important way to make traditional culture accessible to the public. Through the masterpieces by renowned artists, distinctive designs, and public access, the exhibition will promote the inheritance of Chinese painting art and the spiritual essence of Chinese aesthetics, and provide a vivid example of how traditional culture can be activated and developed in the modern era.
